Friends Became Family This Past Thanksgiving!

By | 2019-01-15T18:44:39+00:00 January 15th, 2019|Shelter|

Sometimes the holiday season is the darkest time of the year. It was that case for a lot of clients AND volunteers last year. But one volunteer took what was supposed to be a sad holiday and with the help of the Lord, made it memorable for the guests in the shelter: “As we were concluding our weekly Bible study one Wednesday, I asked the ladies living at the transitional house if they had any Thanksgiving plans. The feeling in the room quickly shifted. The ladies’ countenances went from incredible joy, having just enjoyed a wonderful study and discussion of the 13th chapter in the book of John, to a heaviness and sorrow. For some, tears began to flow, and others grew quiet. As I began to probe a bit I learned that as blessed as they feel to be living in the house, this year they would not be enjoying a “Hallmark” Thanksgiving with their families. For some, distance would prohibit them from being with their family. For others, broken relationships would be the cause. This Thanksgiving my husband and I were going to be alone due to both of those reasons. We had decided that an early dinner at J’s diner and some football on TV would be the extent of our festivities this year. When one of the ladies exclaimed that she would be at the house and anyone else who wanted to join her could. She said that she would be making potato salad. I asked [...]

Meet Our New Director!

By | 2018-10-08T17:21:44+00:00 October 8th, 2018|Announcement, Clearinghouse|

The Board of Directors is happy to announce the newest member of our team, Glen Merriman! We are excited with the vision and experience Glen brings to this ministry! While he is learning everything about Love INC, he wanted to make sure to introduce himself to you as well: Greetings! I am grateful to the Lord Jesus and the Board of Directors of Love INC for entrusting me with the privilege to be a co-laborer in the Kingdom work of this ministry. Words cannot express the sense of excitement and anticipation I have for this season of  Love INC ministry in this community and my personal life. I stand in amazement of the Lord’s gracious and kind care for His Kingdom work and those who labor in it. My fervent prayer is that together we will continue to see the love of Christ advanced in Newberg and the surrounding communities. May God pour out His grace and love as we work together to share Christ’s love in His name! About my journey: In the early seventies my wife and I were living in Phoenix, Arizona. We were both working in management positions in the respective companies of our employment. One day the Lord Jesus walked by the shores of our life and said, “Follow me!” Much like the disciples of old, we left our ‘nets’ and embarked on the exciting journey to follow His call! We packed our belongings, rented a U-Haul truck and with our two children headed to [...]

Announcement From the Executive Director

By | 2018-08-14T20:22:36+00:00 August 14th, 2018|Clearinghouse|

Dear Church Leaders, Love INC Champions & Neighbors, The last two years at Love In the Name of Christ Newberg have been a time of tremendous growth and success for this organization and the community we serve. I am so grateful for the opportunity I have had to be a part of seeing the Church mobilized to share the love of Christ with our community in both word and deed in partnership with Love INC. Today I am writing to let you know that God has called me to assume a similar position at a Christian nonprofit in Tulsa, Oklahoma. At the end of the month my family and I will take a giant leap of faith and travel across the country to continue our personal mission to see lives and our communities transformed by the gospel of Jesus Christ. This new opportunity presented itself in a surprising way and the decision to leave Newberg was difficult to make, but we believe God is behind it. My wife and I spent a week praying and fasting for our future about two months ago and shortly thereafter received a phone call from a family member informing us about the position in Tulsa. We interviewed, visited, fell in love with the Tulsa metropolitan area, and subsequently accepted an offer of employment. While this is a fantastic opportunity for me and my family, it is difficult leaving all of you behind and the wonderful work we do together as a family of God [...]

When You Step Up to Serve, Amazing Things Happen

By | 2018-07-18T20:41:07+00:00 July 30th, 2018|Clearinghouse|

“Lisa” came to Love INC a few weeks ago because she heard we have volunteers willing to do service projects. She had recently been diagnosed with cancer and was getting ready to start a natural treatment process that would involve a lot of time spent preparing special foods. She also knew the treatment she would be going through would make her very tired and was concerned that she wouldn't be able to keep up with her house work and yard work. We put her on our serve project waiting list and told her we would be praying for her, but also explained that we may not be able to provide the ongoing type of help she was looking for. But God is so good and He knows what we need before we even ask! Just a few days after we met with Lisa, we got a volunteer application from someone who, when she came in for an interview, expressed interest in providing help with house work and yard work, possibly on a regular basis for someone who may need it. So we connected the two of them and they are meeting this week to work out a schedule. We never cease to be amazed at God's generous blessings and His perfect timing! “And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” - Hebrews 11:6

Generous Locals Gift a Bike!

By | 2018-07-18T20:39:35+00:00 July 24th, 2018|Gap Ministries|

“Casey” is a young man who is a newer client of Love INC. We had given him a bike to get back and forth to work, for which he was extremely grateful. His bike ended up needing some minor repairs, so he took it to the bicycle shop here in Newberg to see what they could do for him on his limited budget. They pointed out that the bike he had really wasn't the best for his body type, and suggested he get a different bike. When he told the store that he had gotten the bike from Love INC, they gave him a new bike free of charge! They even generously fixed up the used bike and donated it back to the bike ministry. “If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the Lord your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be.” - Deuteronomy 15:7–8

A Bright Outlook on Life!

The Behavioral Health Clinic at George Fox University provides voucher for free counseling sessions for all Love INC clients. Emily stopped by the office last week to let us know that these sessions have been incredibly helpful! Thanks to counseling, Emily now has more confidence in herself than ever.  It has even been the springboard for her to be able to finally get a job. She starts her new job at a local department store this week and is so thankful for everything YOU have done for her along her journey to get where she is now!

A Complete Transformation

By | 2018-07-09T21:29:26+00:00 July 9th, 2018|Shelter|

When we met Teresa she was severely traumatized after experiencing homelessness. She had worked her whole life and due to severe, drug-resistant depression, she found herself without a job and no place to live. “I’ve had so many jobs in my life. I’ve worked since I was 15, I’ve been on my own since I was 17, I’ve always had a job.” Her situation was incredibly difficult to process. She was admitted into the Transitional Living Program (TLP) and upon arrival rated herself a 0 out of 10. She struggled to make eye contact with anyone, and due to anxiety and depression could barely complete the smallest task. Through constant support and coaching from the Love INC staff, Teresa began to see changes both inside and out. She started walking outside most days, applying for jobs and going to Relational Ministry and other community classes to interact with other people in our community going through similar situations. Cooking, completing house chores and yard work became a regular activity. She started to volunteer at local service agencies while looking for work. Our Transitional Living Coach even commented “Teresa is looking the best she has since arriving here almost 10 months ago. She is on task and engaged!” The most exciting (among many) moment came when Teresa was hired at a service agency to be a resource advocate for Homeless and Housing! “God has put me in a position to be a resource advocate for homeless and housing! Getting me back out [...]

Overcoming Overwhelming Odds

By | 2018-06-14T17:57:03+00:00 June 24th, 2018|Shelter|

When “Sabrina” first entered the Transitional Living Program (TLP) at the Newberg Community Shelter, she was in a state of shock. Her mother passed away, she was injured on the job and was a victim of domestic violence in the same year. There was a moment where Sabrina decided enough was enough and wanted to change her life. She maintained her sobriety and followed her individual success plan through bouts of depression and illness. Sabrina enrolled in the Ready to Rent Class and worked with Goodwill Job Connections, and within a few months of hard work she finally got a job! She is now starting work full time this week as an employee at a local manufacturing plant here in Newberg. We could not be more excited for Sabrina’s continued recovery and success! “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” -2 Corinthians 4:8-9

Blessed Donation

By | 2018-06-14T21:15:14+00:00 June 20th, 2018|Clearinghouse, Relational Ministry|

Last week we were contacted by a mattress company asking if they could donate a 2-month-old king sized mattress (cost $1500 new). Their client ended up wanting something different than what they had originally bought so the company replaced it for them. The company has a policy of donating returned mattresses and since their client lives in Newberg, we were the first organization they called. The day they called happened to have been our last night of spring term of Relational Ministry classes so we announced that this mattress may be available. A married couple attending that class mentioned that they were in need of a new mattress. So on Monday we called the company, they put us in touch with their client, then we contacted one of our volunteers who agreed to pick it up and deliver it. This almost-new, excellent quality mattress will arrive at our client’s home tomorrow evening! “Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they?” Matthew 6:26

Spring Term A Huge Success!

By | 2018-06-14T17:47:32+00:00 June 14th, 2018|Relational Ministry|

Witnessing the eyes of participants light up with discovery and self-realization is one of the biggest treasures from being a part of Relational Ministry. This term was no different! Nine participants (along with their mentors) learned valuable skills in Money Management. "I was pleased and surprised by how much I learned in this class. The way [the instructor] brought Bible verses into it that I thought had nothing to do with finances was fascinating." – “Megan” "This class was a revelation. I loved it and everything that I got from it." – “Chris” We also had two new Nutrition instructors who gave great advice to five participants who were struggling with a multitude of health problems. "I am incredibly grateful to Casey and Dawn for coming alongside me in my health” said “Heather.” Eleven participants even paid off their debt and were matched $1 for $1 with funds donated by you! The relationships between instructors, mentors and participants grow to strong bonds that continue outside of class more often than not. These special relationships and the Christ-centric teaching are the key to true transformation for everyone involved. “Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” 2 Corinthians 5:17
