A New Job for a New Man

By | 2018-05-23T17:49:56+00:00 May 29th, 2018|Clearinghouse|

“Caleb” is a young man who found himself homeless and came in to do an intake last Thursday. The intake volunteer noted that he is very intelligent and really seemed to want to better his situation. He came back into the office a week later to tell us he got a job and is also moving into Helping Hands tonight to begin their program! He was so thankful for the help YOU and our local churches gave him, and is excited to start his new job. “May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands.”  – Psalm 90:17

Not a Stitch of Furniture

By | 2018-05-22T21:32:24+00:00 May 22nd, 2018|Gap Ministries|

When our volunteer receptionist was checking voicemails on Monday, there was a message from “Regina” (a client), saying she just moved to a new place and has "not a stitch of furniture." Since there isn’t a furniture ministry currently, the volunteer knew she would have to call Regina back to try to refer her to another organization that might be able to help her get furniture at a low cost. But the very next message she checked was a donor saying they have a bunch of furniture to donate if we have someone who could use it. We were able to connect the two of them with each other and now some much needed furniture is on its way to Regina. God's timing is so amazing! “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11

I Felt Like I Was Saved – Dawn’s Graduation From the TLP

By | 2018-04-24T21:02:41+00:00 April 24th, 2018|Shelter|

When we first met “Dawn,” her life was unstable and chaotic. She was staying at friend’s houses or hotels while trying to find a job to keep her and her children’s lives afloat. When she had to give her children up to the foster care system, she knew it was time to get some help. Once Dawn was admitted into the Transitional Living Program (TLP), she felt immediate relief. Melanie, the Transitional Living Coach, was able to give her realistic goals to be able to get her back on her feet again. “I didn’t have anybody to help me before, Melanie gave me hope. I had a sense of purpose.” Dawn, Melanie and Kim during one of their regular meetings When Melanie saw Dawn’s drive to not only get her life back on track but to regain custody of her children, she knew exactly who would be the best mentor for Dawn. Kim has a similar story and has been successfully living on her own with her children since leaving the shelter almost three years earlier. With Melanie and Kim by her side, in just six months Dawn was able to find and keep a job, save enough money to move into her own house and is well on her way to getting her kids back. Praise God! When asked how her relationship with God was before and after her time in the TLP, “I was kind of close to God, but now I’m reading my Bible more [...]

Saying Goodbye

By | 2018-04-24T21:50:06+00:00 April 20th, 2018|Shelter|

We were so sad to say goodbye to the Resident Managers at the shelter! We are so grateful for the time Katelyn and Miranda have devoted to the women participating in the Transitional Living Program. They have sacrificed a lot to live in the shelter and be a positive Christian influence on the women. We pray as they move on to their next adventures that they remain devoted to the Lord and use what they have learned in this position to continue to serve with loving hearts and minds. God bless you!!

After Many Obstacles, James is on His Way to Putting His Life Back Together Again

By | 2018-03-01T17:48:56+00:00 March 7th, 2018|Clearinghouse|

Just out of rehab for drug abuse, James has a five-month-old baby boy who he has not yet been able to meet. His biggest goal right now is to get to a place in his life where he can be a good father. His son gives him hope that he can turn his life around. When James came to Love INC he was hoping we could help him get a bike, but he had no idea there were many other things we could do for him. He was able to pick up his bike that same day and he also walked out of our office with vouchers for non-food pantry items, kitchen items, laundry services, and even diapers for his son provided by Christians like you. While James seeks employment and a place to live, his heart overflows with thanks to God for being his provider, and to the many donors who make it possible for his needs to be met during this time of transition in his life! “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.” - Proverbs 13:12

We Asked Mentors What It’s REALLY Like

By | 2018-02-27T22:02:11+00:00 February 27th, 2018|Relational Ministry|

What is Your Favorite Part of Being a Mentor? "I love connecting with other people, and I also like the opportunity to provide a listening ear. I am too eager to "problem solve" in my personal relationships, and I feel that being a mentor allows me an opportunity to practice just being there for someone, rather than actively trying to solve problems or find solutions. Basically, growing alongside someone."  - GM How Has Being a Mentor Changed You? "It is good to be there with people for just a few steps of their life journey. I've met so many wonderful mentees and mentors along the way. They have so much to share and give and value people so much. Through the awkwardness and silences... tears and hugs... depression and despair, followed by hope and new direction. Life stories, walking side by side, learning from each other." - NC What was Challenging About Being a Mentor? "Not coming off as being superior" - ME "Showing up every week - sometimes feeling like I had nothing to offer but then staying 'til late because we got to talking about so many interesting things." - LG "Something I am learning in multiple areas of my life is how to establish good and healthy boundaries. The classes this last semester were very helpful for me and hopefully my mentee as well. It is definitely a work in progress!" - SH What Would You Tell Prospective Mentors to Prepare [...]

One Small Item Gave Roger Hope

By | 2018-02-22T07:40:12+00:00 January 24th, 2018|Clearinghouse|

“Roger” had been homeless for seven years, but he found hope when he found a job! We received a call one morning just as we were opening to hear that Roger found a job, but there was one problem.... he needed non-slip work shoes. This was a necessity, since his new job was in a restaurant. He was able to make it down to our office, where YOUR donations were able to provide help to get shoes in time. Ramiro was so thankful and said that he wants to help volunteer at Love INC to help other families in need! He will also be taking advantage of the multitude of church ministries that will supply his apartment when he gets one. He loves Jesus with all his heart and had a smile from ear to ear to prove it. Your work is making stories like Roger’s possible. Thank you for loving our community In the Name of Christ. "There will always be some in the land who are poor. That is why I am commanding you to share freely with the poor" - Deuteronomy 15:11 -

NYE Treat for the Shelter Guests!

By | 2018-01-08T17:52:11+00:00 January 8th, 2018|Shelter|

When Charlotte and Cameron found out that their night to provide a meal at the shelter was happening on New Year's Eve, they decided to go all out! Cameron is a gourmet cook, so they gave the guests a night to remember. Here's what Charlotte had to say: "It went off without a hitch! Cameron & I dressed in our chef's aprons and set the table with a tablecloth, cloth place mats and candles, and we served a five course dinner with each course served separately. We also had sparkling cider in champagne glasses. It seemed to go really well and everyone enjoyed it. It was a great New Year's Eve with the ladies!"

Connecting Hope

By | 2017-12-26T19:15:12+00:00 December 26th, 2017|Shelter|

It is part of the mission of the Newberg Community Shelter to connect the women experiencing homelessness with organizations in the community who can help them. When we got this note from an employee at Goodwill Job Connection, we had to share it: "I just want to say Thank you for all you do. I have seen the gals [in the shelter] come to me just hopeless and depressed and to see where they are now is just amazing! They are full of faith and hope. I really appreciate you referring these great gals over to me and I have enjoyed getting to know them over the past several months! Again, Thank you for all you do to make a difference in their lives." “No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.”—1 John 4:12

A Christmas Blessing

By | 2017-12-14T19:01:32+00:00 December 14th, 2017|Clearinghouse|

“Blake,” a single dad with a 10-year-old daughter, became a client of Love INC right before Thanksgiving. He had lost his job, hadn't gotten paid for the last pay period he did work, and was on the verge of losing his apartment because he couldn't pay his rent. He was hoping we could help him find a shelter that would take him and his daughter in if they did end up getting evicted. He was thrilled with all of the things we were able to give him vouchers for so that he could continue to care for his daughter, who is the light of his life. He was also very appreciative of the fact that we were committed to praying for them. We had scheduled Barry for a haircut appointment, and today he had to cancel because he started working and couldn't make it in during the day. We are joining him in praise to God for providing a job for Barry just in time for him to keep his apartment and provide a merry Christmas for him and his daughter. "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go." – Joshua 1:9
