A Glow From God

By | 2017-10-11T20:15:59+00:00 October 11th, 2017|Clearinghouse|

“David” has had a traumatic life; his friend died of cancer, he is going through a divorce, and his dad was recently hospitalized. When the stress and depression became too much, he attempted suicide. After recovering, David realized he does want to live, but with God to walk beside him in these tough times. He got back on track with the Lord and has a positive attitude, which shines through when you meet him. You can see Jesus on his face. Now David is working with Love INC, his church and local agencies to gain stability. He is searching for a job, his own apartment, and would eventually like to preach the gospel. Join us in praying for David that he continues this journey of stability and that he walks with the Lord the whole way through! “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.” – Ephesians 1:7

We Can’t Do It Alone

By | 2017-10-11T17:22:51+00:00 October 11th, 2017|Gap Ministries|

Free showers for the community will begin in November thanks to the generosity of local churches! Here's a message from Pastor Matt of River Street Church of God announcing the good news: We can’t do it alone. No congregation can, nor should. I think we often get caught up in wanting the PR opportunity when we’re doing something good. Maybe it will attract visitors and grow our church, we think. But Jesus’ upside-down kingdom cares not for such vainglory. He called us to work together—to launch into the darkness of the world arm-in-arm. And so, when Love INC moved last year, losing the capability to offer showers to our community, our church started looking for partners to help us put a shower in our building. It didn’t take long. Within a month a group had pulled together to make a shower happen. Habitat for Humanity offered to install the shower at-cost. Chehalem Presbyterian Church became financial partners. Patrons will be able to use personal care kits provided by Grace Baptist. And Love INC helped us apply for grants and think through the logistics. With the team assembled, we set to raising the money needed. It took a while, but we got there in May. Habitat began the work then and over the course of the last few months we’ve been doing all that we could to get the shower ready for use. Now we’re just a few weeks away from being ready to open. We’re excited for the opportunity to [...]

The Hillside Inn is Now a Gap Ministry!

By | 2017-09-11T22:46:28+00:00 September 11th, 2017|Gap Ministries, Shelter|

As access to affordable housing has continued to be a top need in the Newberg community Love INC has been engaged in conversations with local churches over the past several months about what specifically they can be doing to help. We are excited to announce that Hillside Fellowship is the second church, in what we hope will be many more to come, to partner with us to address housing needs. They focus exclusively on the 18-30 year-old young adults in our community who need a place to “rest, heal and grow.” Their transitional program, Hillside Inn, has been operating similarly to the Love INC shelter and so it is a natural fit for us to begin collaborating deeper with one another. Hillside Inn will serve as a referral for Love INC clients and Hillside guests will have better access to Love INC services and resources. Together, we will be continuing to do our part to provide housing opportunities for young adults and single women in the community through a Christian environment. As Hillside has come on board we have received a generous financial donation from Northside Community Church to strengthen both existing shelter services. Red Hills Church also continues to provide the Love INC shelter’s house free of charge! Pastor Jeff Getsinger (Northside) and Pastor Shane Crawford (C3) have been working closely with Heath Placek (Love INC ED) in the larger vision of our initiative which is to see other churches meet the unaddressed areas of homelessness in Newberg. Stay [...]

A Creative Surprise

By | 2017-09-06T16:39:11+00:00 September 6th, 2017|Clearinghouse|

The Springs at Sherwood surprised us last month with a check from their Employee Jean Fund! What is the Employee Jean Fund, you ask? On Fridays they encourage their employees to wear jeans; in turn, they donate one dollar to the Jean Fund Jar. Once they collect $25, they donate to an organization of the employee's choosing. We are so grateful to be recipients of this fund, and very impressed with The Springs employees' creativity! “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men” Colossians 3:23

Young Life Volunteers Encouraged By Service

By | 2017-08-30T18:31:28+00:00 August 30th, 2017|Clearinghouse|

“Amy,” a Love INC client, was desperate for help on her local farm that she runs single-handedly. A group of guys from Young Life were able to answer her need for help and completed two jobs that were on her critical list! Amy was overflowing with gratitude: “I have just been feeling so overwhelmed this year. I can't even express what the help means to me. Thank you again, I appreciate [the volunteers] and Love INC so much.” Taylor, the volunteer leader, added: “It was awesome! I think [Amy] felt blessed and encouraged by the boys, and they were able to appreciate her.” It is incredible to witness God bringing our community together to not only meet essential needs of clients, but bless the volunteers serving as well. “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.” - John 12:26

Micro-Finance Success!

By | 2017-08-29T16:56:20+00:00 August 29th, 2017|Relational Ministry|

Money Management saw some great success with the lead of a volunteer Financial Planner. Participants saw new progress each week with financial management. “I have learned a lot about the importance of giving and have been able to pinpoint where a lot of our money is going” said one participant. All this knowledge wasn’t the end, though. Each participant was given the opportunity to apply for our micro-finance program where Love INC matched up to $200 worth of funds put toward paying down debt (each term). Four participants have been able to reap the benefits of this program so far. One woman completed her third term of classes and was rewarded with the maximum $500 money match, which went toward car repair debts. During this time, she also decided to sell her house. Though giving up her home was difficult, she feels that it is a sound financial decision. Another woman graduated from the program and received help with a dental bill along with paying back a court fee. Yet another class member found long-awaited answers to prayer when she managed to secure a job shortly after starting the class and finally found relief from debilitating joint pain with the help of physical therapy. Another participant paid down $200 worth of credit card debt, and put a guest speaker’s words into action by talking to her creditors about her interest rates. After speaking with them, she was able to lower the interest rate on all of her debts! It’s been [...]

Wonderful Nutrition Information

By | 2017-08-22T16:56:11+00:00 August 22nd, 2017|Relational Ministry|

It was a rewarding season with some great victories for the spring/summer Relational Ministry classes. This time around, eleven people participated in the three-month Money Management and Nutrition courses. Karla McMellon led the Nutrition class, covering a new tenet of healthy living every week. One participant noted that “food groups—what they are and the effects of both healthy and unhealthy foods” was the most helpful part of the class. With this information, it’s no wonder everyone had something encouraging to say about how beneficial the class was. “I have not taken a nutrition class like this—[Karla] was wonderful with all her information.” “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV

Remembering the Gospel

By | 2017-08-16T21:33:23+00:00 August 16th, 2017|Clearinghouse|

We recently conducted an intake appointment with a woman who is experiencing immense difficulty as she wades through trial after trial. For the past two years, her life has consisted of much relational strife due to a divorce, financial hardship as a result of losing her business, bouts of severe depression/anxiety and she struggles to see a way out of her situation. We did our best to provide her with as many resources as we could to help her see that there is a community surrounding her willing to offer the love and care she needs to get back on her feet. Towards the conclusion of our time together with her, our intake volunteer turned the conversation to the name of our organization, Love In the Name of Christ. It was shared that God’s love has been demonstrated to us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Rom. 5:8). God gave His one and only Son to die in our place, and we can have the hope of heaven and abundant life by simply trusting in what He has accomplished on the cross for us. Earlier in the talk the woman had shared that she was a believer. As the gospel was being spoken over her once more, she teared up and said, “Thank you…sometimes you just need to be reminded of what Christ has done for you. All of these resources are helpful, but they’re not what’s ultimately most important. I am feeling much more [...]

This Place Saved My Life!

By | 2017-08-14T18:59:43+00:00 August 14th, 2017|Shelter|

When Maggie first entered the Newberg Community Shelter, she felt lost. “My mother had just passed away and she was my whole purpose. I didn’t know how I was going to survive. I really felt like doing harm to myself. I felt like I wasn’t worth living.” But God had been with Maggie step-by-step through a difficult divorce, losing custody of her daughter, and eventually the death of her mother. Now through the shelter she had an opportunity to get back on track. Signing the check for her first month's rent! “Even in the darkest and lowest of times, this place saved my life. There was always a tiny little seed that said you are better than this, and that was God.” Though the first time Maggie left the shelter resulted in her moving back, it was another life lesson that prepared her for the journey. This time she was able to accomplish the tasks our Transitional Living Coach, Melanie Harrison, had assigned and participate in other programs to help her succeed. “Maggie has been a blessing to me, she went above and beyond what we asked of her in her individual success plan,” commented Harrison. Recently, Maggie secured a new apartment! While working with YCAP, they were able to provide Maggie’s security deposit. Recognizing her hard work, a team from Newberg Christian Fellowship volunteered to help her move and capped the day off with a celebratory meal from Pogy’s. “I didn’t even know how to talk to [...]

Resources to Restore

By | 2017-08-09T22:45:40+00:00 August 9th, 2017|Clearinghouse|

Love INC Executive Director Heath Placek recently gave a ministry update to the Newberg Ministerial Association at a picnic in Memorial park. During the time of fellowship and sharing, Pastor Irma from Red Hills Church shared an encouraging testimony about how she had referred a woman to Love INC to find out about low-income housing options available in the community. She reported that Love INC had provided this woman with a simple handout including all of the low-income apartments, and their approximate rental rates. With the help of the handout that individual was able to get into an apartment within a matter of two weeks! This is a great example of the success that can take place in someone’s life when churches utilize Love INC as a referral. We all are the Body of Christ working together! “Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ.”- 1 Corinthians 12:12
